Maldon Victoria Australia

What's on in Maldon.

Maldon (Pop 1,500) is situated 137kms north west of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. It is on the slopes of Mount Tarrangower in an agricultural, pastoral and gold mining district. The township retains its authentic pioneer-like appearance with many historic features from the gold mining era preserved. Maldon was declared Australia's first notable town in 1966 by the National Trust.

Gold was discovered here in 1853 and extensive mining continued into the 1920s and '30s. Today there is ample evidence of those mining days. A visit to the information centre and museum will unveil many of the pictorial and other relics from the past. Take a tour of Carmen's Tunnel, a self guided tour of the diggings trail, do the town walk, see the monumental bee hive chimney, the gold dredge and drag line or visit the cemetary with its pioneer and Chinese sections. You can also travel back in time by taking a ride on the vintage steam train.

The town itself was once a thriving metropolis. In the shopping precinct there are a large supermarket, butcher, chemist, bank, bakery, real estate agents, historic newspaper, hardware store, newsagent, milk bars, takeaways, hotels, restaurants and tea rooms. There are specialty shops selling wares such as home cooked bakery products, books, antiquarian prints, dolls and teddies, patchwork fabrics, a plant nursery, crafts, antiques and much more.

Maldon is close to Lake Cairn Curran which is popuar for fishing, sailing and water skiing. There are many noteable winderies spread throughout central Victoria, and nearby there is a stunning lavender farm, dingo farm, trout farm and yabby farm. It is also central to Bendigo, Castlemaine, Daylesford and Hepburn, Ballarat, Maryborough, thus making it an ideal base for touring central Victoria.

Surrounding towns and districts: Castlemaine, Maldon, Newstead.
